European Open Science Cloud for Cancer-
a European Wide Foundation to Accelerate Data-Driven Cancer Research

First EOSC4Cancer General Assembly held

The first EOSC4Cancer General Assembly Meeting was held on 28 - 29 September  in Barcelona, hosted by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. This meeting provided updates on the progress status of all workpackages, explored new opportunities within the EU Cancer Mission, while discussing future goals and milestones. Another separate session was dedicated to highlighting and strengthening out project's partnership with synergy projects within the EU Cancer Mission.

1. Day 1 - 28 September

The first day was rich in in project updates and satellite sessions coordinated by each Work Package. Afterwards, in parallel breakout sessions, transversal topics on different project challenges were discussed.

2. Day 2 - 29 September

Following a recap of the first day’s events, each breakout room squad introduced the outcomes of their sessions, after which EOSC4Cancer’s next steps were discussed. On a broader spectrum, Angelo Solimini, Policy officer, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission gave an EU Cancer Mission update, followed by a roundtable with some of our EU Cancer Mission Synergy Projects. A conversation with the Scientific and Ethics Advisory Board brought the day to a conclusion.

We thank everyone who contributed to an assembly rich in updates, conversations, and new ideas!

EOSC4Cancer contributes to EOSCSymposium 23

The annual 2023 EOSC Symposium, themed "Taking EOSC Into the Future", took place on 20 – 22 September in Madrid, hosted by the Spanish Presidency. EOSC4Cancer was also an active contributor to this year’s programme by presenting at two sessions, about EU Missions and Trusted Research Environments, as well as by engaging with interested stakeholders at our exhibition booth.

In the speaking session “EOSC contribution to the EU Missions”, coordinator, Salvador Capella Gutierrez explored collaboration with other mission projects from various fields and discussed how the different parts of the EOSC Mission are becoming a critical asset for research communities and decision makers.

Another highlight of the Symposium from EOSC4Cancer’s point of view was the discussion about Trusted Research Environments which are highly relevant for sensitive data use cases such as human health data.

Cancer Data Space Roadmap Consultation Event

On 17 October, EOSC4Cancer’s Cancer Data Space Roadmap Consultation Event was successfully held with participation of a myriad of stakeholders. The day's discussions centered obstacles in obtaining cancer data, missing data aspects, interoperability, and more.

Workshop held on Cancer Data Training and Capacity Building

On 18 October, EOSC4Cancer’s WP5 gathered its expertise to investigate how to drive forward Cancer Data Training and Capacity Building. During a packed day of sessions and discussions, the Work Package 5 coordinators shared overviews of current achievements, while defining future pathways of engagement and the next steps to Cancer Data Space Roadmap integration.

The EOSC4Cancer Network of Key Cancer Data Support Professionals is Launched

On 6 September 2023 EOSC4Cancer celebrated the launch of the cancer data support professionals’ network. The group’s mission is to complement the overall effort of WP5 that aims to ensure that the biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals will have the knowledge and skills on how to best address their scientific questions and challenges by using the tools and infrastructure towards accelerating and optimising their research.

EOSC4Cancer Joins the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health as a Driver Project

We are excited to announce that EOSC4Cancer will soon be joining the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health(GA4GH) as a Driver Project!

During their 11th Plenary Meeting in San Francisco, the GA4GH announced the 10 new Driver Projects joining the initiative, among which is EOSC4Cancer, the first project of the EOSC Association to be a part of this alliance.

The GA4GH Driver Projects together provide access to nearly 4 million genomes across a wide array of projects. EOSC4Cancer’s aim within the project is to make curated cancer data available to strengthen cancer research at all stages, from prevention to treatment. We are honoured to be a part of this initiative, and look forward to future achievements!

EOSC Macro Roadmap launched

EOSC4Cancer had been steadily contributing to high-level EOSC objectives, one of which is the Macro Roadmap - a visual map of the results of projects developing EOSC and the contributions of the EOSC Association member organizations. These contributions will be summarized according to objectives and action areas.

After more than one year of activity, the first deliverables of the EOSC4Cancer project are available for public access on our Zenodo community. These reports highlight our activities, milestones, and plans for the project’s foreseeable future in data management, outreach plans, and more.
